Lay summary: PROTOCOL-1 is a pneumococcal vaccine research trial for children and adolescents with chronic disease (or chronic medical conditions) Pneumococcal disease is an illness caused by certain germs (bacteria) called Streptococcus pneumoniae. These germs can cause serious infections in the ears, nose, lungs, blood, or brain. These infections can occur more frequently or be worse in children with chronic disease.

The purpose of the PROTOCOL-1 trial is to test an investigational trial vaccine that may help protect against pneumococcal disease. Your child may qualify to take part in this trial if they are aged 2 to under 18 years old and:

    • Is being treated for one of these conditions:
      • Diabetes
      • Chronic liver disease
      • Chronic lung disease
      • Chronic heart disease
      • Chronic kidney disease
    • Has completed the recommended childhood pneumococcal conjugate vaccine regimen prior to 2 years of age
