Lay summary: The Pilot Study for Testing the App-based Global Adolescent and Child Physical Activity Questionnaire is a multi-country CIHR funded study that will develop an app-based questionnaire and determine its accuracy in measuring physical activity among 8- to 17-year-olds in 14 low-, middle-, and high-income countries from 6 continents. Our second objective is to collect data on active play for the first time in many of these countries. We are seeking to recruit only a few (about 15) children and adolescents stratified by urban and rural areas, and their parents to participate in this study. The primary site for GAC-PAQ is University of Lethbridge. The study is approved by the University of Lethbridge and CHEO Research Ethics Boards. We want to know if the app works well for children and parents and if they understand the questions as intended. We are inviting parents and their child/children to participate in a study to test the app-based physical activity questionnaire, rate their satisfaction with the questionnaire, and comment on their experience using the app. This process would take about 20 minutes one time during school visits with the children and for parents it would take about 15 minutes which they can complete at their own convenience – that’s it. Children and parent combinations that agree to enroll will be provided an email to contact our research team. The link to complete the questionnaire will be sent by the research team and participants will be asked to download the GAC-PAQ app using their Android or Apple device. All participants will also have the opportunity to indicate whether they would like to be contacted about future studies/discussions regarding the setting of research priorities. Involvement in any future discussions/research is optional and will not affect participation in this study. Children and parents will be given a $20 e-gift card ($10 each) they can use at their own convenience in appreciation of their time. All participants will have the option to receive the overall pilot study results.
