Pharmacy-related research began at the CHEO pharmacy with Regis Vaillancourt in 2005, and shortly thereafter, the program became involved in a wide variety of research projects throughout CHEO. The pharmacy research program covers a broad spectrum of child health through three major research areas: medication management system; health literacy and the use of pictograms to label medication; and chronic pain management. Facilitating the sharing of knowledge, expertise and resources creates a dynamic environment that promotes excellence and enhances a student’s knowledge and practice. The group’s pharmacy-related research projects are designed to promote multi-disciplinary research and enhance collaboration among staff and within CHEO.

An international comparative analysis of public reimbursement of orphan drugs in Canadian provinces compared to European countries

Our comparative analysis has unveiled that Canadians have less access to therapies for rare disease than those in the highest-access countries. In order for Canada to improve its record, we need a coordinated national strategy that will enable patients with rare disease to equitably and sustainably receive timely access to the most effective therapies.

Modeling adult COX-2 cerebrospinal fluid pharmacokinetics to inform pediatric investigation

Transfer of unbound COX-2 inhibitors from plasma to CSF compartment can be described with a delayed effect model using an equilibration rate constant to collapse observed hysteresis. An additional transfer factor was required to account for passage across the blood-brain barrier. Use of a target concentration strategy for dose and consequent plasma (total and unbound) and CSF concentration prediction could be used to inform pediatric clinical studies.

Cannabis use for therapeutic purposes by children and youth at a tertiary teaching hospital in Canada: A retrospective chart review

Medically supervised cannabis use occurred most often in patients with intractable or refractory seizures. According to these data, seizure response is variable, and initial decreases may be transient for pediatric patients using cannabis. To ensure greater consistency and rigour in the conduct of prospective research and thus to generate better-quality research on the therapeutic effects of medical cannabis, development of a standardized care record is needed.
