Pharmacy

Pharmacy-related research began at the CHEO pharmacy with Regis Vaillancourt in 2005, and shortly thereafter, the program became involved in a wide variety of research projects throughout CHEO. The pharmacy research program covers a broad spectrum of child health through three major research areas: medication management system; health literacy and the use of pictograms to label medication; and chronic pain management. Facilitating the sharing of knowledge, expertise and resources creates a dynamic environment that promotes excellence and enhances a student’s knowledge and practice. The group’s pharmacy-related research projects are designed to promote multi-disciplinary research and enhance collaboration among staff and within CHEO.

Research Projects

  1. An international comparative analysis of public reimbursement of orphan drugs in Canadian provinces compared to European countries

    04/03/2022

Our comparative analysis has unveiled that Canadians have less access to therapies for rare disease than those in the highest-access countries. In order for Canada to improve its record, we need a coordinated national strategy that will enable patients with rare disease to equitably and sustainably receive timely access to the most effective therapies.

  2. Modeling adult COX-2 cerebrospinal fluid pharmacokinetics to inform pediatric investigation

    01/11/2021

Transfer of unbound COX-2 inhibitors from plasma to CSF compartment can be described with a delayed effect model using an equilibration rate constant to collapse observed hysteresis. An additional transfer factor was required to account for passage across the blood-brain barrier. Use of a target concentration strategy for dose and consequent plasma (total and unbound) and CSF concentration prediction could be used to inform pediatric clinical studies.

  3. Medications to manage infant pain, distress and end-of-life symptoms in the immediate postpartum period

    18/08/2021

  4. Combined influence of practice guidelines and prospective audit and feedback stewardship on antimicrobial treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and empyema in children: 2012 to 2016

    30/06/2020

Use of AAP should also be strongly considered in patients with effusions (even if no pathogen is identified), as clinical outcome appears similar to patients treated with broad-spectrum antimicrobials.

  5. Cannabis use for therapeutic purposes by children and youth at a tertiary teaching hospital in Canada: A retrospective chart review

    02/03/2020

Medically supervised cannabis use occurred most often in patients with intractable or refractory seizures. According to these data, seizure response is variable, and initial decreases may be transient for pediatric patients using cannabis. To ensure greater consistency and rigour in the conduct of prospective research and thus to generate better-quality research on the therapeutic effects of medical cannabis, development of a standardized care record is needed.

  6. Evaluating the re-identification risk of a clinical study report anonymized under EMA Policy 0070 and Health Canada Regulations

    01/02/2020

These results suggest that the anonymization guidance from these agencies can provide adequate privacy protection for patients, and the modes of attack can inform further refinements of the methodologies they recommend in their guidance for manufacturers.

  7. The Impact of Implementing a Preprinted Order Form for Inpatient Management of Otherwise Healthy Children Admitted to a Tertiary Care Centre With a Diagnosis of Bronchiolitis

    01/12/2019

A retrospective chart review was performed of children admitted to the inpatient units at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) with a discharge diagnosis of bronchiolitis.

  8. Analyses of Adverse Drug Reactions-Nationwide Active Surveillance Network: Canadian Pharmacogenomics Network for Drug Safety Database

    04/03/2019

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a major problem in modern medicine, representing up to the fourth‐highest cause of mortality.

  9. A phase 3 randomized study evaluating sialic acid extended-release for GNE myopathy

    25/01/2019

This study provides Class I evidence that for patients with GNE myopathy, Ace-ER does not improve muscle strength compared to placebo.

  10. The reporting of studies conducted using observational routinely collected health data statement for pharmacoepidemiology (RECORD-PE)

    01/11/2018

We anticipate that increasing use of the RECORD-PE guidelines by researchers and endorsement and adherence by journal editors will improve the standards of reporting of pharmacoepidemiological research undertaken using routinely collected data. This improved transparency will benefit the research community, patient care, and ultimately improve public health.

  11. Defining and identifying concepts of medication literacy: an international perspective

    18/09/2018

Future studies should focus on how this definition can be operationalized to support the role that pharmacists and other healthcare providers.

  12. A Pilot Study of Citalopram Treatment in Preventing Relapse of Depressive Episode after Acute Treatment

    01/02/2016

Subjects with depression who responded to open label treatment with citalopram in 12-week acute phase were randomized to continued treatment with citalopram or placebo for 24 weeks.
